Classroom Behavior System

We use a system where the students self-evaluate their day.

Star = “Outstanding Day”

Smiley Face = “Great Day”

-I had expected behavior and had a great day!

Straight Face = “Okay Day”

-I had some unexpected behavior and needed several reminders throughout the day.  Please check the back of my calendar to see the note that I wrote and then let’s talk about my day and what I can I do to have a better one tomorrow.

Sad Face = “Needs Improvement”

-I had a lot of unexpected behavior today.  Please check the back of my calendar to see the note that I wrote and then let’s talk about my day and what I can do to have a better one tomorrow.  I will also lose five minutes of my morning recess tomorrow.  If needed, my teacher will call or send you an email.

We expect most children on most days will evaluate with a smiley face.  At the beginning of the school year, however, it does take some children a little longer to adjust to school expectations.  In class, students will learn the classroom expectations through lots of modeling and guided practice.  If your child evaluates their day with a straight or sad face please ask them to explain to you what the problem was and then discuss what he/she needs to do to have a better day at school.  Calendars will stay in the homework folder so that they can go back and forth between home and school.  Always make sure that the calendar is returned in their folder.  Please initial on each day so that I know that you have seen how their day was. If your child consistently does not bring back their calendar signed they will miss a few minutes of their morning recess.  During the first six weeks of school your child will not be penalized as we will be practicing this.

We have found this to be a very effective system to help our students understand and follow our classroom rules.  The children become more independent and responsible as they learn to make good choices.  Thank you for all your support and cooperation.

Birthday Treats

As discussed at Curriculum Night, birthday treats must be prepackaged due to allergies.  They will be sent home with students at the end of the day.  Treats that do not follow this policy will not be passed out and will be returned home.

Star Student

On your child’s “Star Student” week please send in all items in a bag on Monday.

Monday

During our morning meeting, students will be given several clues about our new Star Student.  Please send up to twelve photos and four special items.  We will put up the photos on the Star Student bulletin board and put the special items on display.

Tuesday

The class will create a special book for the Star Student.  This will be sent home on Friday.

Wednesday

The Star Student brings one of his/her favorite picture books to read to the class (or have the teacher read to the class).

Thursday

The Star Student brings his/her favorite song to freeze dance to with the class.

Friday

-The Star Student will tell all about their pictures and other mementos that they brought in.  Their classmates will get to ask questions of the Star Student.

-If possible, join us in our classroom at 2:30 on Friday to read a book to our class and answer some questions-you can bring a book in or I’ll provide one.

Please call or send a note in advance to let me know that you’re coming in.

*During this week, you may also choose to take your child out for a special lunch one day.  If you plan on doing this please email or call ahead of time.

Water Bottles

Staying hydrated can help your child focus in school.   In order to be green, I ask that students bring in a water bottle labeled with their name that can remain at school for the week.  Students will have ample opportunities to fill up their water bottle to stay hydrated through the day and I will send the bottle home with the students every Friday to be washed.
